The Spice Islands, now part of Indonesia were the target of many an adventurer. Starting with the famous Banda Island nutmeg, a spice which is so good incorporated into many British dishes.
All crops are grown organically, no artificial fertilizers or pesticides are used. They actually produce there own organic fertilizer which they sell commercially. They also use a kind of pesticide which is produced from a type of bitter plant- no chemicals are used in its production.
Most of the farmers started growing the crops for their own consumption only, then they were encouraged to form a co-operative and supply local traditional markets, this is still the main outlet for their produce.
They are very traditional and many follow the ancient beliefs of ‘Kejawen’, a Javanese spiritual knowledge, in search of a good and correct way of life. Followers believe that land is a gift from God and should be worked and cared for in the correct manner.
